City of Auburn to host Liberty Tree planting on June 29

June 23 2026

AUBURN, Ala.- The City of Auburn invites the community to join in commemorating America’s 250th anniversary with the planting of a Liberty Tree on Auburn’s Historic Tree Trail at Town Creek Park on Monday, June 29 at 10 a.m.

Originating as meeting places for colonists in opposition of British rule in the years preceding the American Revolution, Liberty Trees became powerful, lasting symbols that continue to represent the unwavering spirit of America. The City received the Liberty Tree through a statewide initiative with the Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission (A250AL). The tree is one of a limited number of Princeton Elm trees in Alabama that will serve as a reminder of our nation’s founding and encourage visitors to continuously consider the tenets of democracy.

The tree, along with a bronze commemorative plaque, will be placed between the Henry Ford Redbud and the Post Oak on the Gay Street side of the Historic Tree Trail.

Created on Arbor Day in 2005, Auburn’s Historic Tree Trail is lined with nearly 40 trees of historic significance to Alabama and the United States and stretches from Gay Street to Wright’s Mill Road. Most trees along the trail are from the Historic Tree Nursery of American Forests, a nonprofit organization that preserves and propagates historic trees. Some examples include the Abraham Lincoln Overcup Oak, Frederick Douglass White Oak, Helen Keller Southern Magnolia, and a Toomer’s Corner Live Oak.
