Auburn ranked No. 10 in Best-Performing Small Cities report

January 30 2026

AUBURN, Ala.- Auburn ranked No. 10 on the Milken Institute's list of the 2026 Best-Performing Small Cities, which tracked the relative performance of 411 metropolitan areas across the United States. Auburn was the highest-ranked small Alabama city on the list, which appeared in the institute's annual Best-Performing Cities report. Huntsville was the highest-ranked large city in Alabama, coming in at No. 2 on that list.

The Milken Institute's Best-Performing Cities report "reflects the metropolitan areas’ capacity to sustain strong labor market growth and an environment that fosters innovation, while maintaining high livability standards." Cities are ranked based on 13 metrics that combine labor market conditions, high-tech impact and access to economic opportunities.

Auburn maintained the No. 10 spot for the second year in a row, after gaining four positions from its 2024 ranking. The report highlighted gains in the leisure and hospitality sector, which represents 12.7% of jobs, and that the city's high-paying sectors have grown, with employment growth at 7.1% in professional and business services, 4.9% in financial activities and 1.1% in the information sector in 2024.

It was noted that manufacturing remains a key employer, accounting for 9.6% of jobs, with a large share of these jobs reflecting the "key role played by the metro area in the automotive supply chain."

"Auburn continues to lead the way in sustained economic growth in Alabama," Auburn Mayor Ron Anders said. "Anchored by a dynamic, growing business community and a prestigious university, Auburn is well-positioned for continued success. We thank all those who pour into our community, and we are excited about what is ahead."
