Gay Street streetscape project to begin March 19

March 18 2025

Auburn, Ala. - The Gay Street Streetscape Project is expected to begin Wednesday, March 19. The project will include the demolition of existing and the construction of a wider, ADA compliant sidewalk with enhanced pedestrian lighting and landscaping on South Gay Street from the Shops on Gay Street (Publix) to Thach Avenue. This work is expected to last through summer 2025.

The right turn lane from South Gay Street heading west on Thach Avenue will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, until the project is complete. The sidewalk will be closed from the corner of Thach Avenue to the Shops on Gay Street. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the Gay Street crosswalks to navigate around the sidewalk closure.

Traffic control measures will be in place to help motorists navigate around the closure and turn right on to Thach Avenue. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area and to take alternate routes to avoid delays. The City appreciates the public's patience as we make these improvements.
