After the meeting: Auburn City Council highlights from May 21, 2024

May 22 2024

AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn City Council took the following actions at its second regular meeting in May:

Approved a contract for Dean Road/University Drive improvements. The City Council approved a $1.5 million contract for the construction of the North Dean Road and East University Drive Intersection Improvements Project. The project was recommended in the 2017 Comprehensive Citywide Traffic Study and will add left and right turn lanes at the intersection. The project scope will also include new sidewalks within the project limits and upgraded traffic signals. To keep up with the project, visit auburnalabama.org/cip.

Approved an HVAC replacement for Boykin Community Center. The council approved a contract for $242,000 to install eight rooftop HVAC units to serve Joyland Daycare classrooms in the Boykin Community Center. The units will replace the existing 22-year-old, wall-mounted window units, which are nearing the end of their serviceable life and inefficient. The replacement will facilitate future planned renovations to the Boykin Community Center.

Authorized a contract for rehabilitation of the Farmville Road culvert. The council authorized a contract for $49,677.90 for the rehabilitation of 56 linear feet of the 30-inch diameter corrugated metal pipe culvert at Farmville Road. The culvert was inspected in April and found to have extensive corrosion, and it will be repaired using techniques that prioritize cost efficiency and minimizing impacts to Farmville Road, avoiding any temporary closure of the road.

The council also:

  • Announced vacancies on the Planning Commission. Terms begin Aug. 1 and end July 31, 2030. Appointments will be made at the July 16 meeting. For more information about City boards, visit auburnalabama.org/boards.
  • Postponed a vote on a conditional use for a package store at 316 N. Donahue Drive, in the former Family Dollar building. The council will consider this use at the June 4 meeting.
  • Approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Auburn University for the removal and replacement of brick pavers along the plaza in front of the Alumni Center, located at 317 S. College St.
