Auburn Police Department provides information regarding an incident at a residential apartment complex on Golf Club Drive

Auburn, Ala. - On Oct. 24, 2023, Auburn Police arrested Jaquavious Shakur Smith, age 19, and Christian Jayshawn Jennings, age 23, both of Auburn, AL on several felony warrants. Smith was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, two counts of discharging a firearm into an unoccupied dwelling and receiving stolen property second degree. Jennings was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, receiving stolen property second degree and attempting to elude a police officer.

These arrests stem from Auburn Police responding to a residential apartment complex located in the 4300 block of Golf Club Dr in reference to a shots fired complaint. Multiple residents of the complex called and reported that two individuals, armed with handguns, were involved in an altercation that led to both parties firing several shots at each other.

Responding officers located both individuals involved in the shooting, identified as Smith and Jennings, and took them into custody shortly following the incident. Auburn Police received several reports of property damage caused by the gunfire; however, no reports of injury. The circumstances surrounding the altercation lead Auburn Police to believe that this is an isolated incident, and the parties involved are known acquaintances.

During the investigation, it was determined that both Smith and Jennings were in possession of a firearm that was reported stolen.

Smith was transported to the Lee County Jail and held on a $63,000 bond. Jennings was transported to the Lee County Jail and held on a $56,000 bond.

The Auburn Police Department places a high priority on investigating these incidents and ensuring the safety and security of our community. Our officers are actively following leads and collaborating with partner organizations to fully investigate this incident. We do not believe there is a threat to the Auburn community or Auburn University related to this incident.
