After the meeting: Auburn City Council highlights from Aug. 15, 2023

August 16 2023

AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn City Council took the following actions at its second regular meeting in August:

Approved a conditional industrial use at 2575 Innovation Drive. The council approved a conditional use for a manufacturing facility at 2575 Innovation Drive. INICS Battery Solutions Corp. (IBS) is an electric vehicle battery component manufacturer that will construct a new facility in Auburn Technology Park West, invest $14 million and create 30 new jobs. The company expects to begin construction in the fall and open the facility in the second half of 2024.

Authorized a contract for the City of Auburn Branding Project. The council authorized a contract for $92,500 for the City of Auburn Branding Project, which will include a process of uncovering Auburn’s brand identity. The process will include significant public input to reflect the Auburn of today, both as a place and as a City government. Updated branding will ensure that all things City of Auburn have a consistent look, feel and tone to represent the City of Auburn locally and abroad.

Adopted the Fiscal Year 2024 Transportation Plan. The council adopted the FY2024 Transportation Plan, which documents the transportation infrastructure projects — previously approved by the council in the FY23-24 Biennial Budget — for which funding from the Rebuild Alabama Act may be used. The Rebuild Alabama Act provides funds to cities, counties and the state through a gas tax that began in 2019. The plan, which the act requires council to approve each August, is based on an estimate of the revenues anticipated from the fund during the fiscal year, which is about $470,000. For FY24, the funding will go toward planned improvements at the intersections of North College Street and Drake Avenue as well as Drake Avenue and Gay Street.

The council also:

  • Approved a rezoning of 0.52 acres on the corner of East Glenn Avenue and Cherry Street from Neighborhood Conservation to Corridor Redevelopment District.
  • Authorized the purchase of a Heavy Duty Pumper Truck for the Auburn Fire Department in the amount of $873,731.64. The fire truck will replace Fire Engine 4, which has been in service for more than 10 years as a front runner and will be reallocated as a reserve truck, per the recommendation of the City’s fleet manager. The new apparatus will take up to 48 months to build.

Meeting minutes and a video of the meeting will be posted at auburnalabama.org/agenda. Mayor Ron Anders’ recap of the meeting will be posted @CityofAuburnAL on social media. The next regular council meeting will be held on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber, located at 141 N. Ross St. in the Public Safety Building.
