After the meeting: Auburn City Council highlights from Aug. 1, 2023
August 02 2023
AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn City Council took the following actions at its first regular meeting in August:
Approved agreements for the Boykin-Donahue Campus Project. The council approved professional services agreements for a branch library and recycling center as well as an amended agreement for a cultural center — all planned as part of the Boykin-Donahue Campus Project. The project will be constructed adjacent to the Boykin Community Center and will expand cultural and recreational amenities in north Auburn. The agreements include architectural design and engineering services for these three aspects of the campus. The recycling center will move across the street from its current location.
Authorized the purchase of traffic separator devices for the Buc-ee’s intersection. The council approved the purchase of traffic separators in the amount of $25,001.27 to be installed at the intersection of Bucees Boulevard and Cox Road. The Auburn Police Department has made direct observations of vehicles making illegal left turns out of the Buc-ee’s southern-most exit onto Cox Road, which is configured as right-turn only. The traffic separators will improve the safety of the intersections by prohibiting traffic to turn left out of this exit.
Approved a contract for street restriping. The council approved a contract for the Fiscal Year 2023 Street Restriping Project in the amount of up to $250,000 for one year with the option to renew the contract for two consecutive one-year terms. The annual restriping contract is intended to renew street striping that has deteriorated due to age or other factors. The City continually evaluates local roads to maintain a five-year plan helping to prioritize road maintenance.
The council also:
- Approved a commercial development agreement for Country’s BBQ, which will construct a new restaurant facility on its current property and next to its existing facility. The restaurant will continue operation during construction.
- Authorized a contract for $77,370 for the Streambank Stabilization Project at the H.C. Morgan Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF). The project includes planting 200 native trees and 625 native shrubs along the stream at H.C. Morgan WPCF to prevent erosion and restore habitat.
Meeting minutes and a video of the meeting will be posted at auburnalabama.org/agenda. Mayor Ron Anders’ recap of the meeting will be posted @CityofAuburnAL on social media. The next regular council meeting will be held on Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber, located at 141 N. Ross St. in the Public Safety Building.
