After the meeting: Auburn City Council highlights from Feb. 21, 2023
February 22 2023
AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn City Council took the following actions at its second meeting in February:
Authorized street closings and entertainment districts for 2023 community events. Every year, the City Council authorizes temporary street closings in the downtown area for the coming year. The same resolution also establishes entertainment districts for certain events throughout the year. The full list of events can be found in the ePacket for the Feb. 21 meeting at auburnalabama.org/agenda.
Approved the purchase of mobile barriers for downtown events. The council authorized the purchase of 25 Pitagone F18 Mobile HVM Barriers for $58,056. The barriers will be used as a safety measure for special events that require a road closure, such as parades, and will provide a higher level of protection from vehicular intrusion into pedestrian areas.
Rezoned about 34 acres for single-family homes off Ogletree Road. The council approved the rezoning of about 34.7 acres at 801 Ogletree Road from Rural to Limited Development District and also approved a Planned Development District (PDD) zoning overlay. Within the approved PDD, 15 single-family detached homes are planned to be developed on the property with access off Kentwood Drive.
The council also:
- Announced two vacancies on the East Alabama Mental Health (EAMH) Board, and one vacancy on the Board of Education. Terms on the EAMH Board begin April 1 and end March 31, 2029. Appointments will be made at the March 21 meeting. The term on the Board of Education begins June 1 and ends May 31, 2028. An appointment will be made on April 18 after the council has conducted an interview process. Those interested may apply at auburnalabama.org/boards.
- Postponed a conditional use approval related to the LawnGolf USA development, which is currently under construction on property off East University Road. The applicant is requesting a previous condition of approval be removed, which stated that the eastern portion of the property be left undisturbed. The applicant has expressed a desire to build single-family dwellings on the eastern portion facing Dekalb Street.
