After the meeting: Auburn City Council highlights from Aug. 2, 2022
August 03 2022
AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn City Council took the following actions at its Aug. 2, 2022, meeting:
Certified the election of a representative for Ward 4. The City Council certified the election of Tyler Adams to represent Ward 4 on the Auburn City Council, with a four-year term starting in November. Adams was the only remaining candidate to qualify for the seat after Chad Leverette withdrew his candidacy in late July. Per state law, the City Council must certify as elected any unopposed candidate in the Municipal Election. With this seat being filled, there are five wards remaining for which representation will be determined in the Aug. 23 Municipal Election — wards 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7.
Authorized a lot transfer for the construction of three new affordable homes. The council authorized the transference of three lots in the Tucker Heights Subdivision to the North Auburn Housing Development Corporation (NAHDC). The lot conveyance will allow the NAHDC to construct new affordable housing within the city. NAHDC anticipates beginning construction in mid-August. Tucker Heights is a seven-lot subdivision located at the corner of Tucker Avenue and Byrd Street, and these last three lots will complete build-out of the subdivision.
Approved a contract for repairs to East Glenn Avenue at Samford Avenue. The council approved a contract in the amount of $31,407.50 for the repair of damages to East Glenn Avenue at East Samford Avenue. The roadway was damaged when a contractor bored across East Glenn Avenue creating a hump in the road. The cost will be funded by insurance proceeds.
The council also:
- Heard recommendations from the Murals and Community Art Study Committee. Proposed amendments to the zoning ordinance to allow murals are expected to be considered by the Planning Commission and then the City Council in the fall.
- Approved the naming of Field 9 at Duck Samford Park for Jon Oleinick, an Auburn man who coached age 9 and 10 baseball for more than 20 years. Oleinick died unexpectedly this summer, and a group of citizens submitted a letter to request support behind such a dedication.
Meeting minutes and a video of the meeting will be posted at auburnalabama.org/agenda. Mayor Ron Anders’ recap of the meeting will be posted @CityofAuburnAL on social media. The next regular council meeting will be held on Aug. 16, 2022, in the Council Chamber, located at 141 N. Ross St. in the new Public Safety Building at the corner of Ross Street and Magnolia Avenue.
