After the meeting: Auburn City Council highlights from June 21, 2022

June 22 2022

AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn City Council took the following actions at its June 21, 2022 meeting:

Appointed an interim Ward 4 councilperson. The City Council appointed Jennifer Stephens to be the interim Ward 4 councilperson to serve through Nov. 7, or the end of the current term. The seat was vacated by Brett Smith, whose family has moved. Stephens will be sworn in today and begin serving in this capacity immediately.

Delayed a vote on the FY2023 and 2024 Biennial Budget. Consideration of the FY2023-2024 budget was delayed to the July 5 meeting after the Mayor denied unanimous consent to move forward with a vote on the first reading. Delaying a vote on this biennial budget will allow the council and residents time to further familiarize themselves with the budget document. The council has also scheduled a work session to further discuss the budget on Thursday, June 23, at 3 p.m. in the City Meeting Room. For budget information, please visit auburnalabama.org/budget.

Authorized sewer system evaluations in parts of the City. The council authorized sewer system evaluations for three sewer sub-basins (Willow Creek, AU Fisheries/Hwy 147 and Preserve Subdivision) as well as for sewer infrastructure that originates off Auburn University campus and runs through campus and that is currently maintained by the university. These evaluations will provide a comprehensive condition assessment of this infrastructure and a repair recommendation report based on analysis of the data.

The council also:

  • Announced two vacancies on the Greenspace Advisory Board. Terms will begin Aug. 8 and end Aug. 7, 2026. The council will make these appointments at its July 19 meeting. Anyone interested in applying can find more information at auburnalabama.org/boards.
  • Renewed agreements the City has with Auburn University and Auburn Game Day Law Enforcement Corporation for supplemental law enforcement services during Auburn University sporting events. The agreements last through July 2023.

Meeting minutes and a video of the meeting will be posted at auburnalabama.org/agenda. Mayor Ron Anders’ recap of the meeting will be posted @CityofAuburnAL on social media. The next regular council meeting will be held on July 5, 2022, in the Council Chamber, located at 141 N. Ross St. in the Public Safety Building at the corner of Ross Street and Magnolia Avenue.
