City Council to appoint replacement after Ward 4 councilman announces move to Florida

May 19 2022

AUBURN, Ala.- At the May 17 Auburn City Council meeting, Ward 4 Councilman Brett Smith announced his move to Florida for a career opportunity, leading to his resignation from the City Council at the end of May.

Alabama law requires the City Council to appoint a replacement for a councilmember who does not complete their term. The individual appointed by the Council will serve through Nov. 6. On Monday, Nov. 7, the mayor and all eight members of the City Council will be sworn for the 2022-2026 term following the Aug. 23 Auburn municipal election.

Auburn Mayor Ron Anders encouraged the Council to consider appointing an individual who does not plan to run for the seat in August so as not to give any potential candidate an unfair advantage during campaign season. Members of the council expressed their agreement.

Those interested in serving as the Ward 4 councilperson for the remaining term from June 8 through Nov. 6 should have resided in Ward 4 as redistricted for at least 90 days. Maps of each ward are available at auburnalabama.org/redistricting. To be considered for appointment by the Auburn City Council, individuals should submit a letter of interest to Auburn Mayor Ron Anders:
