January 26 2022

UPDATE, Jan. 26: The Auburn City Council approved an amended version of the City of Auburn Redistricting Plan at a special called meeting on Jan. 25. The approved plan will be added to auburnalabama.org/redistricting as soon as the amendments are incorporated.

UPDATE, Jan. 19: At its Jan. 18 meeting, the Auburn City Council postponed voting on the proposed City of Auburn Redistricting Plan until a special called meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber at 141 N. Ross St.

UPDATE, Jan. 5: At its Jan. 4 meeting, the Auburn City Council again postponed voting on the proposed City of Auburn Redistricting Plan until its Jan. 18 meeting. At that time, the council will continue the public hearing to garner further input from citizens. The postponement came at the recommendation of the city manager to give City staff more time to analyze an alternative map that was submitted to the City on Dec. 21 by the NAACP.

UPDATE, Dec. 22: The Auburn City Council held first reading of the City of Auburn's proposed redistricting plan at its Dec. 21 meeting and postponed a vote until its Jan. 4 meeting. At that time, the council will continue the public hearing to garner further input from citizens.

During the Dec. 21 public hearing, the NAACP presented suggested/alternate maps to the City Council. City staff and legal consultants will evaluate these maps and data against state and federal redistricting requirements and provide an analysis to the City Council prior to its vote on a redistricting map.

All presentations and discussion about redistricting from the Dec. 21 meeting can be viewed at youtube.com/CityofAuburnAL. Residents can continue to provide input via the City's redistricting website at auburnalabama.org/redistricting and can provide input directly to the Council at the public hearing on Jan. 4.

Nov. 10: AUBURN, Ala.- The City of Auburn is beginning steps to adjust the boundaries of the City’s eight wards based on population data from the 2020 U.S. Census. According to state and federal law, the City must review and, if needed, redraw district boundaries so that each district has — as nearly as possible — an equal population.

Over the last 10 years, the populations in Auburn’s districts have become uneven as property has been annexed, new developments have occurred and people have moved to and within the city. Under the direction of Auburn City Manager Megan McGowen Crouch, a team of City staff worked with legal experts to evaluate the 2020 Census data and have developed new proposed boundaries for each of Auburn’s eight wards.

Interactive maps of these proposed boundaries, as well as detailed population and demographic data, are available for public review at 2021-redistricting-plan-1-1-coa.hub.arcgis.com.

Auburn residents are encouraged to review the proposed changes and provide feedback via an online survey or at the following open houses:

  • Redistricting Open House: Nov. 18, 4-7 p.m. @ Buston Education and Meeting Center
  • Redistricting Open House: Dec. 6, 4-7 p.m. @ Boykin Community Center

The proposed changes are tentatively scheduled to go before the City Council at its Dec. 21 meeting. The public will also have an opportunity to give feedback at that time. The redistricting plan must be approved at least six months before the 2022 Auburn municipal election, which will be held Aug. 23, 2022.

The City of Auburn encourages all Auburn residents to review the proposed changes and provide input as the process continues. Find more information at 2021-redistricting-plan-coa.hub.arcgis.com.
